1. Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA)

DGA serves as the most sensitive diagnostic indicator of internal incipient transformer faults. Gaseous decomposition products (such as Hydrogen, Methane, Ethylene, Acetylene, Carbon Monoxide, and Carbon Dioxide) are generated under thermal or electrical fault conditions. Key diagnostic parameters include:

  • Arcing & High-Energy Discharge Detection: Identification of acetylene (C₂H₂) concentrations indicating localized high-temperature discharge or winding breakdown.
  • Thermal Fault Analysis: Ratio evaluation (Duval Triangle, Rogers Ratios) to pinpoint localized overheating in magnetic cores, tank shields, or heavy-current leads.
  • Partial Discharge (PD) Tracking: Early detection of low-energy electrical discharges breaking down oil molecules into hydrogen (H₂).

2. Dielectric Fluid Quality & Physicochemical Testing

Routine physical and chemical laboratory testing evaluates the remaining dielectric strength and chemical degradation level of the insulating oil:

  • Breakdown Voltage (BDV - IEC 60156): Measures dielectric strength under high voltage AC stresses.
  • Moisture Content (Karl Fischer Titration - IEC 60814): Quantifies ppm moisture levels affecting insulation breakdown strength.
  • Neutralization Value / Acid Number (IEC 62021): Determines organic acid concentration resulting from oil oxidation.
  • Dielectric Dissipation Factor (Tan Delta & Resistivity - IEC 60247): Measures polar contaminants, sludge precursors, and aging products.
  • Interfacial Tension (IFT - ASTM D971): Detects soluble polar contaminants and oil degradation products.

3. Furan Compounds & Paper Degradation Analysis

Because cellulose insulation cannot be easily replaced without full workshop rewinding, measuring furanic compounds (2-Furaldehyde) dissolved in oil provides a direct, non-destructive correlation to the Degree of Polymerization (DP) of the solid insulation. This assessment estimates the remaining mechanical paper strength and overall remaining technical service life of the transformer core and coils.
